Why Coffee Tastes Better When You Slow Down

Modern coffee culture is often focused on speed, but some of the best coffee experiences happen when we give ourselves time to notice what is actually in the cup.

Coffee contains a surprising range of aromas and flavors. Depending on the bean and roast, you might notice fruit, chocolate, nuts, caramel, flowers or spices.

Instead of drinking immediately, allow the coffee to cool for a few minutes. Temperature has a major effect on perception, and flavors that are difficult to notice when coffee is extremely hot often become clearer as it cools.

Take smaller sips and pay attention to sweetness, acidity, texture and aftertaste.

You do not need professional tasting vocabulary. Describing a coffee as “sweet,” “smooth,” “bright” or “rich” is already useful.

Slowing down also changes the experience beyond flavor. Preparing and enjoying coffee can create a natural pause in a busy day.

Sometimes better coffee is not about adding another piece of equipment. It is simply about giving the cup a little more attention.
